Great Siege 1565 Malta

Great Siege 1565 Malta

Karl V., Spanish king and the Kaiser of Germany gave the island of Malta as fiefdom to the Knights Hospitalizes (Knights of St. John) in 1530 with the purpose to use their powers against the godless enemies. The Turks defeated the fleet of Venice which was the biggest at that time in the Mediterranean Sea in 1538. The only galleys that could still endanger the Turks were that of the Knights of St. John. A conflict was inescapable. ... more

Mdina - the old capital

Mdina - the old capital

Mdina is the old capital city of Malta and lies on the south-western part of the island. You could say only a little bit in the outback. Beside it is Rabat. The population of Mdina is around 400 people. It is quite impossible that the population can increase, because the whole city resembles more a castle or fort then a city. The city lies 190mtrs above sea level (that’s quite high for Maltese landscape) and is surrounded with slopes on three sides. The city has almost the form of a square and is very strong fortified. ... more

Cospicua (Bormla)

Cospicua (Bormla) lies in front of the two peninsulas: Vittoriosa (Birgu) and Senglea (L’Isla). The city is the consequence of the overpopulation of the two peninsulas, Vittoriosa and Senglea. It was designed in 1717 and is surrounded by two fortifications. The outer one is known as the Cottonera Lines and the inner as the Margerita Lines.

Sights in Vittoriosa (Birgu)

There is so much to see in Vittoriosa - the whole city is an open-air museum. The city is surrounded by an incredible flair of history, culture and modernity. The structure of the city equals that of a triangle. On the side facing to the inland there is a big city-wall with two gates. The most interesting way to enter the city is through the Couvre Porte. The side directed to the harbor entrance is also fortified. On the fortification, high above the sea, there is a nice promenade. From there you have a nice view on Valletta, the harbor gate and Kalkara. On the tip of the city is the Fort St. Angelo. The fort is stunning. The last side of the triangle, the side facing the Dockyard Creek/Senglea, has no fortification. There you can find the Casino de Venezia, Maritime Museum, St. Lawrence Church and a luxury hotel. In the city itself something is awaiting you around every corner. In the centre lies the Victory-Square - the square got his name after the Great Siege 1565 of the Turkish. It is said that the Grandmaster La Vallette was wounded during the siege on a fight at the fortification ’Poste de Castille’. The Turkish were already inside the city when the Grandmaster counterattacked them together with his personal body-guards.

Senglea (L-Isla)

The peninsula of Senglea (L-Isla) lies southwards of Valletta in the Grand Harbor. On the left side of the peninsula there is the French Creek in which there are also the docks with the huge cranes. On the other side is the Dockyard Creek and Vittoriosa (Birgu). In the south of Senglea is Cospicua (Bormla). Senglea was founded by the Grand Master ‘De La Sengle‘ in the year of 1551. From him the city also got its name: Senglea.
