Vittoriosa (Birgu)

Vittoriosa (Birgu) is probably the nicest of the three peninsulas southwards of Valletta. The city was the first settlement around this area. When the Knights of St. John arrived in Malta in 1530 they set up camp in Vittoriosa and started to upgrade the fortifications, including the Fort St. Angelo. After the Great Siege of 1565 they moved to Valletta. Birgu has nowadays a population of 3000 and the fortifications are as impressive as those of Valletta. Behind every corner you can discover something new. The best way to enter the city is through the ‘Couvre Porte’ which was restored in 2002. Above is a modern gate which breaks through the fortification of the ‘Poste de Provence’ and is used as a road for cars.

Life and Work in Malta

Whoever wants to come to Malta to live and work here should first try to get a work permit. Malta is a member-state of the European Union, however the island is very small and to protect the citizens and the economy special conditions were introduced. Except of this it’s nothing special. There are numerous real estate agents. The commission fees are quite low (the price of half month’s rental fee).

Electricity/Sockets in Malta

In Malta the sockets used are 3-pin, British standard. On the first gaze it might look quite confusing for people who are not used to it, but it isn’t. The on/off switch is on the upper right side. Obviously if you switch it off there is no electricity on the socket and vice-versa. In this case it is switched on. The socket has three holes.
